Proposal for a National Digital ID in Sri Lankan Cabinet Today

The Ministry of Technology states that the proposal regarding the introduction of a digital national identity card in Sri Lanka under Indian assistance will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval on March 21, Monday.

The Secretary to the Ministry, Jayantha de Silva stated that the agreement will be signed during the visit of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi to Sri Lanka.

The Secretary further stated that the Government of India has agreed to provide US $ 8 million in assistance for the implementation of the digital national identity card program in Sri Lanka.

The card will be introduced to verify the identity of individuals on the basis of their biometric data.

Accordingly, the Secretary to the Ministry of Technology added that it has been planned to issue a Digital National Identity Card to Sri Lankan citizens from November this year.
