India Tinkering with Federated Digital Identities; All Documents to Be Linked to a Single ID

India may soon introduce a ‘Federated Digital Identities’ model that will allow multiple IDs to be added to a single digital ID. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has proposed a new model that will act as a single ID to access people like Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Passport and others

Easy to access ID from a digital ID:

According to media reports, One Digital ID will serve as a single place to store and access all state and central identities. This single ID will help people to avail the benefits of multiple services and will also make the KYC process easier. The framework is said to introduce a new digital architecture that is interlinked and interoperable. It also explains that this new system will empower the people of India and allow them more control over their IDs, thus allowing them to choose what suits a particular situation.

The new federated digital identity has been placed under the India Enterprise Architecture (IndEA) 2.0. IndEA was first introduced in 2017 to make government service digitally easier for users.

The proposal of MeitY will be made public soon and the ministry will seek comments on it by February 27. It remains to be seen how it shapes up. Apart from this, the proposal also includes 3 new Architectural Patterns for several government agencies.

Whereas the idea of ​​having a single digital ID which would have other necessary IDs to enable easy access to new users. It also increases the tension of security and privacy in view of cybercrime.
