Orange County Launches Initiative to Report Cyber-Threats

California’s Orange County has launched a new initiative to help the public identify and report cyber-threats. SafeOC is a localized version of the national anti-terrorism public awareness campaign called “If you see someone, say something.” The campaign emphasizes the importance of reporting suspicious behavior and items to law enforcement.

A website and social media account has been created to support the initiative. It provides examples of suspicious cyber activity and online threats, including sharing of account access and changes in user permission, and configuration changes to files. Users can report suspicious activities through the website directly to the Orange County Intelligence Assessment Center (OCIAC).

SafeOC also provides information on dangers children face playing online, such as malware, cyber-bullying, data loss, and spying. The site offers advice for parents and warns them about hidden fees in freemium games. Parents have been asked to ensure the camera and microphone are defaulted to offsetting and that children don’t create any username that will reveal their personal information.
